ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE – 17 FEBRUARY 2021

An Order of Service For Evening Worship on Ash Wednesday
17th February 2021

Beloved, we are come together in the presence of Almighty God and of the whole company of heaven to offer unto him through our Lord Jesus Christ our worship and praise and thanksgiving; to make confession of our sins; to pray, as well for others as for ourselves, that we may know more truly the greatness of God’s love and shew forth in our lives the fruits of his grace; and to ask on behalf of all men such things as their well-being doth require.

Wherefore let us pray in silence and remember God’s presence with us now.

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires
of our own hearts.
We have offended against thy holy laws.
We have left undone those things
which we ought to have done;
and we have done those things
which we ought not to have done;
and there is no health in us.
Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults.
Restore thou them that are penitent;
according to thy promises declared unto mankind
in Christ Jesu our Lord.
And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may hereafter live
a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of thy holy name.
Amen.

Grant, we beseech thee, merciful Lord,
to thy faithful people pardon and peace,
that they may be cleansed from all their sins,
and serve thee with a quiet mind;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

O Lord, open thou our lips
and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen.

Praise ye the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.

Psalmoday: Psalm 51 King James Version

51 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

9 Hide thy face from my sins and blot out all mine iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be.
World without end.
Amen

Old Testament Reading
Joel 2.12-17

TURN ye even to me, saith the Lord, with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.

And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

Who knoweth if he will return, and repent, and leave a blessing behind him, even a meat-offering and a drink-offering unto the Lord your God?

Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts;

Let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet;

Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say,

Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them:

Wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?

This is the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God

The Magnificat

1 My soul doth magnify the Lord
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

2 For he hath regarded
the lowliness of his handmaiden.

3 For behold, from henceforth
all generations shall call me blessed.

4 For he that is mighty hath magnified me
and holy is his Name.

5 And his mercy is on them that fear him
throughout all generations.

6 He hath shewed strength with his arm
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

7 He hath put down the mighty from their seat
and hath exalted the humble and meek.

8 He hath filled the hungry with good things
and the rich he hath sent empty away.

9 He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel
as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Luke 1.46-55

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be
world without end.
Amen.

ASH WEDNESDAY’S HYMN
Played by Corinne and sung by Graham

1. Forty days and forty nights
thou was fasting in the wild;
forty days and forty nights
tempted, and yet undefiled.

2. Should not we thy sorrow share
and from worldly joys abstain,
fasting with unceasing prayer,
strong with thee to suffer pain?

3. Then if Satan on us press,
Jesus, Saviour, hear our call!
Victor in the wilderness,
grant we may not faint nor fall!

4. So shall we have peace divine:
holier gladness ours shall be;
round us, too, shall angels shine,
such as ministered to thee.

5. Keep, oh keep us, Saviour dear,
ever constant by thy side;
that with thee we may appear
at the eternal Eastertide.

New Testament Reading
St Matthew 6. 16-21

WHEN ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast.
Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face, that thou appear not unto men to fast,
but unto thy Father which is in secret;
and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Nunc Dimittis

1 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word.
2 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation;
3 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
4 To be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Luke 2.29-32

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
now, and ever shall be
world without end.
Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth:
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic Church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen

Prayers

The Lord be with you
And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us
And lead us not in to temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
Amen

O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us.
And grant us thy salvation.

O Lord, save the Queen
And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.

Endue thy ministers with righteousness
And make thy chosen people joyful.

O Lord, save thy people
And bless thine inheritance.

Give peace in our time, O Lord.
Because there is none other
that fighteth for us,
but only thou, O God.

O God, make clean our hearts within us
And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

Ash Wednesday’s Litany of Penitence
(led by Reverend Jenni)

Most holy and merciful Father:

We confess to you and to one another,
and to the whole communion of saints

in heaven and on earth,
that we have sinned by our own fault
in thought, word, and deed;
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and
strength. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We
have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven.
Have mercy on us, Lord.

We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us.
We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved
your Holy Spirit.
Have mercy on us, Lord.

We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy, and impatience of our lives,
We confess to you, Lord.

Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation
of other people,
We confess to you, Lord.

Our anger at our own frustration, and our envy of those
more fortunate than ourselves,
We confess to you, Lord.

Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, and
our dishonesty in daily life and work,
We confess to you, Lord.

Our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to
commend the faith that is in us,
We confess to you, Lord.

Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done:
for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our indifference to injustice and cruelty,
Accept our repentance, Lord.

For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our
neighbours, and for our prejudice and contempt toward those
who differ from us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.

For our waste and pollution of your creation, and our lack of
concern for those who come after us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.

Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us;
Favourably hear us, for your mercy is great.

Accomplish in us the work of your salvation,
That we may show forth your glory in the world.

By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord,
Bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection.

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Who desires not the death of sinners,
but rather that they may turn
from their wickedness and live, has given power and
commandment to his ministers to declare and pronounce to
his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of
their sins.

He pardons and absolves all those who truly
repent, and with sincere hearts believe his holy Gospel.

Therefore we beseech him to grant us true repentance and his
Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do on
this day, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure
and holy, so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

O GOD the Father, Creator of heaven and earth;
Have mercy upon us.
O God the Son, Redeemer of the world;
Have mercy upon us.
O God the Holy Ghost, Sanctifier of the faithful;
Have mercy upon us.
O holy, blessed, and glorious Trinity, one God;
Have mercy upon us.

The Collect of the Day

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God,
who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent:
Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we
worthily lamenting our sins,
and acknowledging our wretchedness,
may obtain of thee,
the God of all mercy,
perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

The Collect for Peace

O God, from whom all holy desires,
all good counsels,
and all just works do proceed;
give unto thy servants that peace
which the world cannot give;
that both, our hearts may be set
to obey thy commandments,
and also that, by thee,
we being defended from
the fear of our enemies
may pass our time in rest and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Amen.

The Collect for Aid against all Perils

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord;
and by thy great mercy defend us
from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

The Grace

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost,
be with us all evermore.
Amen

Our service will close with this sung blessing
