REMEMBERING AN OLD SOLDIER – JACK BOLLAND

As we remember the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day on 15th August 2020, I thought you might like to read this newspaper article about John Robert (Jack) Bolland, who served in the army for 21 years, including in WW2. He was a Regimental Sergeant Major in Orde Wingate’s ‘Chindits’ in Burma.

Thankfully Jack survived the horrors of war and returned home. He lived for many years with his wife, May, in Morton on Swale. Jack never forgot his comrades and every year he was proud to lay the wreath at St Helen’s Church, Ainderby Steeple on Remembrance Sunday.

Jack died in January 1999 at the age of 88, but his voice can still be heard in a recorded interview he gave for the Imperial War Museum, which you can hear by clicking on the following link: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/80017282
